Haunted Bridges is a guide to reportedly haunted bridges, from covered bridges and steel spans to stone crossings, in the United States and in a few other countries. It collects bridge ghost stories and legends, with the place, what is said to happen there and, where it is known, the documented history of the bridge.
How the stories are written
Documented history is kept separate from legend. Each entry covers where the bridge actually is, what the record says happened there, and what travelers are said to see or hear. The ghost stories are told as local folklore, not as proven fact. Where no record backs a story up, it is described as a legend or a rumor, and many of these tales have changed over the years. Bridges carry traffic and sometimes trains, so please enjoy the stories from a park, a viewpoint or a walkway where one is open, not from a stopped car: never block a bridge or a lane, never visit a bridge that is closed, condemned or on private land, and never walk onto a bridge that carries an active railroad.
